Presentation may range from restrictive lung dysfunction to acute respiratory failure with an increased PaCO2 and respiratory acidosis and blunted ventilatory reponse to hypoxia and/or hypercarbia. Aspiration, brain damage and death can occur (See PMID 25536092).
